What are Open Learning Environments(OLEs)?

OLEs are the student-centred learning environments, also known as exploratory or discovery environments  where learners evaluate their own needs for the knowledge and make use of resources and tools to achieve their goals while scaffolds are offered in the process of learning.

The individual determines how to process based on his or her unique needs and perception, and experiences, identify resources available to support learning efforts, and formalizes and tests personal beliefs.(Land &Hannafin,1996)

OLEs provide interactive, complimentary activities that enable individuals to address unique learning interests and needs, study multiple levels of complexity, and deepen understanding"

In this case, OLEs are  appropriate for heuristic-based learning and exploration of flexible understanding and multiple perspectives.
